On The Air

I settle back into the last empty seat on the bus, between a thin, casually dressed young man and a buxom, late twenty-something woman.

Inviting anonymous callers, the radio announcer says it is time for the ‘make-up or break-up’ segment of his show.

After several crank calls, a woman with a smooth voice calls in to the radio program. She says she would like to break-up with her boyfriend. It is the carnival season and he hasn’t been taking her out.

Glancing to my left I realize that woman next to me is whispering into her mobile phone. As her lips make the shapes of the words, the sounds are coming, slightly delayed, through the radio. She says goodbye to the announcer and smiles at me.

She has a pretty face…
